My leadership can be understood through my passions, vision, giftings, talents, strengths, and weaknesses. It can also be understood through the kind of person I choose to empower through my authority.
I think about the current bailout for those facing foreclosure. Politicians have chosen to empower this large group of people through a financial subsidy. They made a reactionary decision rather than a proactive decision to crack down on shady loan practices and the people willing to give loans to people who could not afford them.
I know that leaders cannot avoid making reactionary decisions. However, we can demonstrate a pattern of making proactive decisions and modeling reflection, planning, and evaluation to those who follow us. I want those whom I lead to grasp the power and value of choosing to empower those that represent a proactive leadership decision making.
A culture cannot be set, changed, or developed in a place where reactionary decisions are normal. I do not believe we have done our job developing those we lead unless we have stretched their capacity to lead proactively.
